The Type I is the smallest of the Gold Dollars and is the only Gold Dollar that bears the Liberty Head design. With the second shortest date range as well as variety of coins Type I Gold Dollars are number two on the list of rarity level among the three types. Only minted for six years there are a total of 26 varieties that range from the ultra rare to the easily attainable more common coin. The most famous Type I Gold Dollar is the 1849-C, Open Wreath that auctioned in July of 2004 for $690,000.00 in MS63 PL condition.
